Department Computing Facilities

The Computer Science department operates an undergraduate laboratory of 24 iMac workstations. In addition the department has a research laboratory with equipment for the Robotics and Security courses as well as other student projects. In addition the department operates a 16 node cluster computer based upon the Rocks Cluster distribution and a Eucalyptus Cloud. Programming language support includes Java, C, C++, Objective-C, Lisp, Prolog, Scheme, Python and other specialized langauages.

The Computer Science lab is located in Rm 16 of the Wing Technology Center. This lab is available only to students who have a computer science lab account.

Undergraduate Research

Many Computer Science students actively engage in research. These projects involve one-on-one work with a member of the faculty in the project that is of joint interest. Students usually receive course credit for their experience. The best way to begin a research project is to contact a member of the faculty and discuss the possibilities.

Here are just a few of the recent opportunities our students have taken advantage of in terms of undergraduate research.

  • Grant awarded for the Summer NSF (National Science Foundation) Research Experience for Undergraduates program
  • Computer Research Association Experience for Women (CREW) research grant
  • UW-L Student Research Grants
  • Presentations at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR)
  • Presentations at Argonne National Laboratories Symposium for Undergraduate Research
  • Presentations at the Midwest Instruction and Computing Symposium (formally Small College Computing Symposium)
  • Participants in the Computer Research Association Distributed Mentor Project, spending a summer working with a computer scientist at a research institution

Upsilon Pi Epsilon

National Honorary Society for Computer Science that recognizes student achievement.

Internships

Over half of the computer science majors in their last two years find part-time computing employment on campus. In addition, numerous cooperative education/internship opportunities are coordinated through the Computer Science Department and the UW-L Career Services Office. Students majoring in computer science who wish to enroll in CEI 450 or CEI 475, University Internships, must have completed 15 credits of computer science course work, including C-S 220, and must have a minimum GPA of 2.50 in computer science courses to be eligible for departmental approval and supervision. Credits earned in internships do not apply to major or minor requirements. Students interested should contact Tim Tritch in the Career Services office for more information.

Job Placement

UW-L Career Services Office placement statistics show that 100% of all computer science majors are placed upon graduation. Typical starting annual salaries are consistently at or near the top of all UW-L graduates. Recent employers who have hired some of our graduates include: IBM, EDS, Trane Company, FirstLogic, CUNA Mutual, Honeywell, Avionics, MCI, WestGroup, Digital Equipment, Hewlett-Packard, Northern Micrographics, Cray Research, M&I Banks.
